There isn’t a wealth of information out there in terms of test drives as there would be with standard types of vehicle. This is one of the reasons why wheelchair users can find it difficult to find a vehicle that will suit their needs not just in terms of access but also the style of the vehicle. Therefore, just as with choosing a standard vehicle it is still important to have in mind the exact type of vehicle you are looking for when choosing your wheelchair accessible vehicle.
The first thing to look at is access to the vehicle, as a disabled driver will you need to be lifted into and out of the vehicle every time you go out? If so then you may want to look at a vehicle with a remote control winch that will enable you to be lifted in and out of the vehicle without requiring the assistance of another person. Alternatively if you are a passenger another way of avoiding the need for help getting into the vehicle is a vehicle fitted with a retractable ramp that allows full access. You can then enter and exit the vehicle faster.
You might think that making a vehicle wheelchair accessible will mean compromising on its appearance and design.
