Blog > News > Paralympic games set to be a sell out!

28th September
The window for tickets to the Paralympics in 2012 has officially closed, it was announced on Monday. For the first time in Paralympics history, interest in the sessions oversubscribed at a rate that equals Olympic sessions.

Applicants lucky enough will find out if they are successful by November 18th, but thousands of the public will be left disappointed. Sports of particular oversubscription were track cycling, swimming and the final rounds of wheelchair rugby and wheelchair tennis.

So why the sudden surge in interest in these sports? A contributing factor could be the British success at Paralympic games over the years, with the team bringing home more and more gold medals each year. And not to forget that Britain finished second behind China in the Beijing games; Paralympians are doing Britain proud and raising the profile of their sport throughout the world.

Sebastian Coe, the London 2012 chairman has rightly stated that “we have a head start with Paralympic sport in Britian”, with young children looking up to figures such as Ellie Symmonds, Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson, David Weir and Oscar Pistorius.

Coe went on to say that Paralympic sport is “actually an interesting metaphor- it is about courage and determination, it is about equality and sometimes it is about overcoming extraordinary setbacks in life”.

We look forward to the Paralympic games in London 2012 greatly!
